Putting Your Past on Paper
A Memoir Writing Presentation by Linda Chiara, Author and Speaker
Monday, July 14, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Brookfield Library Community Room Memoir writing is something that anyone can do ... and everyone should. Have you ever wanted to write about your life experiences - whether for family members, or with an aim to someday be published? Linda Chiara will give tips on how to get started and how to trigger your memories.
Linda is a freelance writer who has published over a hundred articles, essays, children's stories and non-fiction pieces. Her work has appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, Readers' Digest, Ladies Home Journal, Woman's Day, Family Circle, and many parenting magazines around the country including Connecticut County Kids. In addition, her stories for children have appeared in Boys' Life and in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship. She teaches all types of writing, including memoir, novels, essays, and children's, in private classes and for Bethel's Continuing Education Program. Registration for this program is required. Brass Guild Concert
Sunday, July 13 at 4:00 p.m.
Please join us on the library's north lawn at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 for a concert by the Brass Guild Quintet.
The Brass Guild Quintet will present Renaissance Then and Now. The program, a clever comparison of classical and contemporary music, will include audience participation numbers for both adults and children. Audience members are invited to come dressed as a favorite Renaissance or Shakespearean character! The quintet includes Anthony Nunes, trumpet; Stan Schmidt, trumpet; Nancy Sudik, French horn; Walter Wantman, trombone; and Scott King, tuba.
Bring your chairs or blankets and be prepared for an hour of exciting music. If it rains, the concert will be moved indoors to the library's Community Room. Refreshments will be provided by the library's Concert Committee.

Adult Summer Reading Program:
Prizes! Programs! Great Books! Read or listen to any adult books of your choice for chances to win prizes. Prize drawings include gift certificates to local restaurants, theaters, and businesses. Our grand prize is a drawing on July 25 for two Red Sox tickets for the 7:00 p.m. game on August 1, 2008, against the Oakland Athletics to be played in Boston. Pick up your book forms at the Checkout Desk, complete them, and drop them in the prize box of your choice at the center display table. The more books you read and enter into the drawings, the better your chances to win! Take a look at our programs over the summer -- everything from cupcake decorating to memoir writing to book and movie discussions. There's something for everyone! Join in and enjoy!

Try Wii Golf! Friday, July 18, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Fore! All adults (ages 18 and up) are welcome to come and try their swing on the big screen with the Nintendo Wii Golf.
It's great for some light exercise and lots of laughs. No prior experience is required, only the willingness to try something new and exciting. We'll teach you how to play, and if you're already a golf expert, you can teach us how to swing. Call to register or register online. Free popcorn and soda provided. No clubs needed!

Book 'Em Mystery Book Discussion Monday, July 21, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. Our mystery group will meet to discuss Baltimore Blues, the first book in the award-winning Tess Monaghan series written by mystery author Laura Lippman. Tess is an unemployed reporter who spends her days working part time at the bookstore owned by her aging hippie aunt. She agrees to help a friend by snooping on his fiancée to see if she's cheating on him. But, of course, things get complicated, and Tess ends up in the middle of a three-ring murder mystery which implicates some of the most powerful families in the city of Baltimore. Lyme Disease Program
Gigi Guthrie, MSW, Author of Chronic Lyme Disease: Ways to Outsmart a Smart Disease
Tuesday, July 15, 7:00 p.m. This year, 25,000 children and adults will be infected with Lyme disease. What treatments are available for them? Since Lyme disease is relatively under-researched, the vast number of treatments is at first overwhelming. All have their risks and side effects. Gigi Guthrie, author of Chronic Lyme Disease - Ways to Outsmart a Smart Disease, found that patients must use those treatments that work best for her or him. This book acts as a guide that allows readers to understand options and be able to discuss with their doctors the best plan of attack. From Book to Film A Book Discussion and Movie Screening: About a Boy Book Discussion: Thursday, July 24 at 12:30 and 7:00 p.m. Movie Screening: Friday, July 25 at 2:00 p.m. Join us for a book discussion and movie screening of the popular book and movie, About a Boy. The fiction book, written by Nick Hornby, tells the tale of London playboy Will Lightman, who pretends he's a single dad so he can date single moms. He finds his fantasies warped by the real needs of an unusual 12-year-old boy. This well-reviewed book was made into a film starring Hugh Grant (who considers this one of his best roles), Toni Collette and Rachel Weisz. Come to one or both. Refreshments provided. Email Education: A Beginning Email Class Friday, July 11 at 9:00 a.m. Do you have friends and family who ask for your email address to help keep in touch? A beginning email class at The Brookfield Library will help you set up a free email account and show you how to send and receive email. Cupcake Bash!
Join us for an adult cupcake decorating party at the library at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6.
We'll provide cupcakes and supplies for you to decorate using the ideas in the bestselling book Hello, Cupcake. You'll take home a new copy of the book (list price $15.95) and your decorated cupcakes. Just bring your apron!
The fee of $18 for this program includes a copy of the book and the supplies you'll need to unleash your creativity. Advance registration and payment deadline is July 30. Sign up early -- we can only take the first fifteen people to register.

Magic Workshop for Teens
Don't miss a hands-on magic workshop just for teens on Monday, July 7 @ 6:30 p.m.
Award-winning magician Jonathan Jacques will personally teach you amazing magic tricks that you can use to wow your family and friends! You will also leave this workshop with two kits of magic supplies. There will be a $5 materials fee for this program, which must be paid at the time of registration. Space is limited!
